How to Apply for a Position in the Ohio National
Guard Technician Program
The Ohio National Guard Technician Program is Federal Civil Service employment.
Positions are available in the General Schedule (GS) and Wage Schedule (WG/WL/WS) areas.
General Schedule positions are administrative in nature (white collar) where as Wage
Schedule positions are maintenance oriented (blue collar). All positions for new hire
require military membership in the Ohio National Guard as a condition of employment.
Positions are available for both the Army and Air National Guard. Basic information found
on every job vacancy announcement is as follows.
Who Can Apply
The area of consideration is always listed directly below the location and unit of
assignment on each job announcement. Jobs are usually open to onboard permanent
technicians first and the area of consideration is broadened when selection is not made or
if the position is deemed entry level. Applications will only be accepted from current
Excepted and Non-Dual employees of the Ohio National Guard, current military members of
the Ohio National Guard and individuals who are eligible and willing to enlist in the Ohio
National Guard.
How To Apply
Interested applicants may apply by submitting an Application for Federal Employment
Optional Form 612 (click here for a Microsoft Word 97 copy).
Additionally we recommend the supplement to OF612 (click
here for a Microsoft Word 97 copy); Resume or any other form of application must
contain the following information:
Announcement number, title and grade(s) of the job for which you are
applying.
Full name, mailing address, day/evening phone numbers (including area code), Social
Security number, date of birth, country of citizenship (most Federal jobs require United
States citizenship), reinstatement eligibility (if required, attach SF 50, proof of your
career or career-conditional status), highest Federal civilian grade held (also give job
series and dates held).
Education: name and address of high school (including zip code if known), date of Diploma
or GED, name and address of any colleges/universities (including zip code if known,
majors, type and year of any degrees received. If no degree, show total credits earned and
indicate whether semester or quarter hours). Send a copy of your college transcripts if
you wish to substitute education for experience.
Submission of the supplement to Federal application for employment
(attached to each announcement) is highly recommended in addition to your application. As
all applicants must indicate MILITARY MEMBERSHIP STATUS, RANK, UNIT OF ASSIGNMENT,
MOS/AFSC.
It is required that the Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA) listed on
the job announcement be addressed in your application or attached to the application. The

Qualification Requirements
Each position requires a minimum number of months of specialized experience in order to
be minimally qualified for the position. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) have
been identified for each position and must be addressed by the applicant. The KSA
Statement must be submitted with application in order to be considered for the position.
Certain positions allow for substitution of education for experience. Appropriate
transcripts must be submitted with application.
Conditions Of Employment for Excepted Ohio National Guard Technicians
- Because of the distinctive military nature of the technician program, certain specific
restrictions apply. All technicians must continue to maintain proper military membership,
to include military grade, unit of assignment, branch of service and be MOS/AFSC qualified
for the technician position occupied. Situations of military grade inversion are not
permitted; i.e., a military technician may not be militarily senior to his full time
supervisor. Military incompatibility is not permitted in the technician program in
accordance with NGR 600-25. The recommended applicant will not be approved for appointment
until he/she occupies a compatible MOS/AFSC in the Ohio National Guard aligned with the
technician position.
- The applicant selected for this position will be required to participate in the Direct
Deposit/Electronic Fund Transfer Program.
- The recommended applicant will not be approved for appointment until the appropriate
physical examination is completed.
- The applicant will be required to wear the military uniform.
Evaluation Factors Used
Personal interviews, review of application and the Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
(KSA) Statement. (The KSA statement will be evaluated by the Personnel Staffing Specialist
to determine minimum qualifications and by the interview panel to determine the best
qualified.)
