Adopt-A-School is a program that develops partnerships between Ohio Guard units and primary, middle and secondary schools. More than 80 units have established partnerships with their local schools. This program encourages Guard members to act as mentors and tutors, and provides a variety of services based on the needs of individual schools.

OhioReads

The National Guard joins Governor Taft in his statewide OhioReads initiative, with volunteers providing weekly reading tutoring to students in kindergarten through fourth grade. The National Guard supports the governor’s philosophy that, "No challenge is of greater importance than helping every child to read at grade level and pass the fourth grade reading proficiency test." Ohio Reads program volunteers will work with students using the HOSTS Language Arts Readiness program. This program combines developmentally appropriate assessments, learning strategies, and hands-on instructional activities specific to the individual child. Volunteers will be working with children who may not use English as their native language. The HOSTS program is ideal for such children.
