The military Innovative Readiness Training (IRT) program was created within the 1996 National Defense Authorization Act and is designed to leverage military resources and capabilities for the betterment of our civilian communities. The Ohio National Guard may provide support and services to certain eligible organizations and activities in addressing community and civic needs when such assistance is incidental to military training or is otherwise authorized by law. IRT generally refers to National Guard support to qualified agencies in the form of general engineering, infrastructure support and assistance, transportation and healthcare services. Examples include the use of National Guard engineers to construct a soccer field for a local public school or the use of National Guard medics and ambulances to support the Special Olympics.
