“The Great Race” rolls through Ohio

Official release (.pdf)

Columbus - “The Great Race,” one of the country’s longest-running vintage automobile rallies, is coming to Ohio at the end of June. Sponsored by the National Guard, this year’s race starts June 24 in Philadelphia, Pa. and finishes July 8 in San Rafael, Calif. More than 100 antique automobiles are expected to participate.

Drivers will make their way into Ohio beginning June 26, stopping for lunch in Cambridge. After an afternoon pit stop in Zanesville, they will stop for the night in Dublin. The next morning, drivers will be on their way once again, pausing for one final Ohio pit stop in Vandalia before continuing on to Indiana.

Several Ohio natives participating in the race teams are: Donna Moot, of Granger, Ohio, navigator of car #54, a 1929 Speedster; David Milem, of Burlington, Ohio, driver for car #63, a 1929 Ford Model A Speedster; Ed Bowman, of Dublin, navigator for car #90, a 1957 Mercedes 190 SL; and Russ Pisle, of Lima, driver for car #117, a 1960 Chevrolet Pick-up.

The Cambridge, Zanesville, Dublin and Vandalia communities are planning local activities to welcome the teams. The Ohio National Guard has sponsored the event for the third consecutive year. Military displays will be present at each of the stops, including the #16 National Guard NASCAR race car, which will be showcased at the overnight stop in Dublin.
