FAQ - Commonly asked questions

Q: Where can I get a CAC Reader?
A: You can go to the Army Small Computer Program Web site, TheNerds.Net, or AAFES.com Prices Range from $15-$30

Q: Do I need a CAC reader to log-in to AKO?
A: No. However, you need to log-in to AKO with your CAC to reset your password every 150 days.

Q: What documentation do I need to get my dependents in DEERS?
A: In most cases, the dependent’s birth certificate and Social Security card are required. Additional documents may be required, and each situation is unique, so you may want to contact us prior to your visit.

Q: Does the sponsor need to be with me when I come in to get a dependent ID card?
A: Yes, unless the sponsor is deceased, deployed (must be coded as deployed in the system), or has provided the dependent with a signed DD 1172 obtained from an ID card facility.

Q: I was not in the National Guard or in the Army. Can I still get my ID card at your facility?
A: In most cases, yes. There are only a few instances where personnel and family members can not be serviced by a different branch.

Q: What forms of identification are required to obtain my ID card?
A: At least one form of photo ID and one other accepted document: US Passport, Drivers License, Social Security Card, Birth Certificate, etc.

Q: Can I keep my old ID card?
A: No. Regulations prohibit us from allowing this to occur. Old cards will be collected at the time a new card is issued and any expired card will also be confiscated.

Q: Can a person have more than one ID card?
A: Based on eligibility, some individuals may be required to hold multiple types of cards, but only one card of any particular type may be held by any individual at one time. Example: A federal technician, who is an M-day Soldier, can have two CACs, but only one can be a military CAC. The other must be a Federal Employee CAC.
