Amex Platinum Credit Score Tips and Prequalification Guide

Amex Platinum Credit Score Tips and Prequalification Guide

When it comes to travel cards, The Platinum Card® from American Express is about as good as it gets in 2025. The Amex Platinum Card gives cardholders unmatched benefits like unlimited access to Amex Centurion Lounges, eligibility for hotel upgrades, and comprehensive travel insurance (terms apply). Throw in the hundreds of dollars in annual statement credits, and this card seems almost too good to be true.

While it is in fact real, it’s exclusive, and will require a FICO® Score of at least 670 to qualify.

Here’s what you need to qualify for The Platinum Card® from American Express

American Express generally requires you to have a “Good” credit score, which FICO defines as at least 670. To qualify for the Amex Platinum Card, however, it’s recommended to have “Excellent” credit, defined as 700 or higher.

The Amex Platinum Card requires significant spending for someone to earn back and exceed the hefty annual fee of $695 (see rates and fees), which is why it’s reserved for the most responsible credit users.

How to check if you’re prequalified for the Amex Platinum Card

Prequalification doesn’t guarantee that you’ll qualify for a given card, but it’s a very strong positive indicator. It’s a great way to check if you’re in the ballpark for qualification without getting a ding on your credit score. Here’s how to check if you prequalify:

  1. Visit the American Express website at: americanexpress.com.
  2. Navigate to the “Cards” section in the top menu.
  3. Click “Interested in Amex? See if You’re Pre-Qualified.”
  4. Enter the necessary info and submit your application.

Just as being prequalified doesn’t guarantee that you’ll get the card, being denied prequalification doesn’t mean for sure that you’ll be denied. Prequalification is a strong indicator of your eligibility, but it isn’t final.

Is credit score all that matters?

While your credit score is the most important factor in approval, it’s not the only thing taken into account. Amex will take a closer look at some of your more granular financial factors like:

  • Income requirements
  • Debt-to-income ratio
  • Payment history
  • Credit history

No single factor will guarantee card approval or denial. Overall financial health will certainly help your cause if your FICO® Score may have dipped below the common threshold of 670.

Here’s what to do if you’re denied for the Amex Platinum Card

Getting denied for new credit isn’t the end of the world, but it’s important to figure out why you didn’t get approved. Review your credit profile and the reasons provided by Amex for your denial.

Then it’s time to get back to the drawing board. Here are some steps to take to help get approved for the Amex Platinum Card the next time around:

  1. Make on-time payments: Pay down or pay off debt every month without missing a deadline.
  2. Avoid new credit applications: Each application is a hard pull on your credit report, and applying for too many cards in too short of a timeframe is a red flag to card issuers.
  3. Lower your credit utilization ratio: This is the ratio of how much credit you have available versus how much of that credit you’re currently using. You can lower this ratio by paying down debt or extending your open credit limits.
  4. Check other prequalifying offers: Amex has a suite of great cards, and one of them might be a better fit for you.

Remember to always be responsible in your credit usage and pay your bill in full each pay period. The Platinum Card® from American Express is a great tool to have in your wallet, especially if you love to travel in style — but you have to prove you can handle it.
