What to know about the government shutdown on day 1 from Capitol Hill
There is no sign of budging on either side of the aisle according to USA TODAY’s Congress reporter, as the government shutdown enters day one.
A partial government shutdown began on Wednesday, Oct. 1, the first day of the U.S. government’s fiscal year 2026.
Due to the inability of lawmakers to reach an agreement on funding, certain aspects of the federal government have ceased operation. The shutdown will continue until Congress passes appropriations.
This may have a significant effect on numerous federal services and positions, including air traffic control. As a result, it could potentially disrupt the carefully planned vacation you have been eagerly looking forward to all year.
Travel may look a little different in the coming days, with potential delays, longer wait times, and limited services.
To help ensure your trip isn’t disrupted, AAA Northeast is offering advice for managing your travel during the government shutdown.
Here’s how to navigate travel during the shutdown
Arrive at the airport with extra time: Although all airport operations, air traffic control operations, and TSA screenings continue during a shutdown, staff may be reduced, resulting in delays and longer lines at security screenings. Using TSA PreCheck or CLEAR is recommended.
Monitor flight status: Keep track of your flight’s status, as there could be last-minute delays or changes. Stay updated through the airline’s website or app, and be prepared for any unexpected delays.
Stay updated: Check the FAA, TSA, and State Department websites for any updates and travel advisories.
Be prepared: Gather emergency contact information ahead of time and keep the contact details for your airline, hotel, and travel agent readily available before departure.
Plan ahead: Consular services such as passport issuance, notarial services, emergency assistance for citizens abroad, and documentation of births and deaths domestically and abroad will continue to be available. However, delays may occur, so you must check the status of your passport. If you need a new passport, they recommend starting the process as soon as possible to avoid delays.
Check status: Some National Parks may be closed or offering limited services. Make sure to check the status of the park you will be visiting before heading there, as each park operates on a case-by-case basis.
