Connecticut State Police offer traffic tips

HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB) – The holiday season is one of the busiest travel periods on Connecticut roadways.

With more vehicles on the road and heavier pedestrian traffic around shopping areas and downtowns, the risk of crashes increases — especially during peak travel times.

The Connecticut State Police encouraged drivers to plan ahead, allow extra time, and expect delays during holiday weekends. They provided the following safety tips.

Plan Ahead and Time Your Travel

Traveling during off-peak hours can reduce congestion and stress. Before you leave:

  • Monitor traffic updates and weather forecasts.
  • Allow extra travel time and expect delays on holiday weekends.
  • Share your travel plans with someone and check in when you arrive safely.

Drive Smart, Drive Safe

Good driving habits matter more than ever during the holidays. Keep these basics in mind:

  • Slow down and obey posted speed limits.
  • Maintain a safe following distance to allow for longer stopping times, especially in winter or heavy traffic.
  • Buckle up — seat belts save lives. Everyone, every seat, every trip.
  • Stay alert and avoid distractions; put your phone down while driving.
  • Watch for pedestrians and increased foot traffic near shopping areas, parking lots, and downtowns.

Impaired and Reckless Driving

Driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or even some prescription medications significantly impairs your ability to drive safely. Connecticut State Police said they would have increased patrols and DUI enforcement throughout the holiday period.

  • Never drive impaired.
  • Reckless driving will not be tolerated — it puts lives at risk.
  • If you suspect a driver is impaired, safely note identifying details (vehicle description, license plate, direction of travel, and location) and report it by calling 911.

Winter and Vehicle Preparedness

Be ready for changing weather and road conditions:

  • Check your vehicle before traveling: tires, lights, brakes, and windshield wipers.
  • Remove all accumulated snow and ice from windows, mirrors, headlights, roof, hood, and trunk to ensure visibility and prevent hazards for other drivers.
  • Keep your gas tank at least half full and carry an emergency kit (blanket, water, flashlight, charger, basic tools).

Shared Responsibility

Safe holiday travel is a shared responsibility among drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. Look out for one another and make choices that help everyone arrive safely.

The Connecticut State Police are committed to keeping our communities safe this holiday season. Our goal is simple: everyone gets where they’re going safely and returns home to loved ones.
