Mazandaran Province in northern Iran is among the most beautiful areas in the country and just got the attention it deserves from international stakeholders and the tourism business community. Integrated tourism business development in and for Mazandaran Province is best illustrated through the hosted fam trip titled ‘Mazandaran the Green Gateway of Iran,’ and the social media tourism marketing influencers and tourism travel experts from the Russian Federation, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan in attendance.

Mazandaran Province features and in fact, celebrates the entire diversity of the country and is estimated to take part in a growing CIS economic tourism collaboration. Thus the goal to integrate economic tourism marketing with Mazandaran Province. The fam trip will be a major reason for the marketing of international Mazandaran tourism to move to another level from just marketing the country in general to partners to a ‘targeted tourism marketing to the CIS’.

Mazandaran’s Strategic Location and Tourism Potential

Located on the southern coast of the Caspian Sea, Mazandaran has long been recognized for its breathtaking landscapes and historical significance. Its position between the Caspian Sea to the north and the Alborz Mountains to the south makes it one of Iran’s most scenic regions, offering a unique blend of coastal and mountainous environments. With 338 km of shoreline, mineral springs, and lush Hyrcanian forests—a UNESCO World Heritage site—the province is a haven for eco-tourism, adventure travel, and wellness tourism.

The deputy governor-general of Mazandaran for economic affairs and tourism, Mohammad-Ebrahim Toulaei, emphasized the significance of this tour in promoting the province’s tourism potential on an international stage. “This program is aimed at presenting Mazandaran’s tourism capacity at a transnational level and within the framework of developing northern tourism diplomacy,” Toulaei said. This approach aims not only to attract tourists but also to create meaningful partnerships with neighboring countries in the region, positioning Mazandaran as a regional hub for tourism.

Cultural Diplomacy Through Tourism

The six-day fam tour will take participants through the diverse regions of Mazandaran, including the eastern, central, and western parts of the province. The itinerary will feature visits to iconic tourism sites, cultural landmarks, and natural wonders that have long attracted domestic travelers. Alongside these visits, participants will engage in specialized meetings focused on developing joint tourism routes and exploring opportunities for collaborative tourism projects in the future.

As tourism grows in importance in Iran, the aim is to foster long-term cooperation between Iran and its neighboring countries, with a focus on health tourism, ecotourism, and the green economy. By inviting influencers and tourism professionals from Russia, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan, the initiative underscores the importance of regional partnerships and cross-border tourism development. This strategy aligns with the broader goal of sustainable tourism, emphasizing the need to protect Mazandaran’s unique natural and cultural heritage while promoting tourism as an economic engine.

Mazandaran’s Unique Offerings and Natural Attractions

Mazandaran’s tourism appeal is rooted in its stunning natural diversity and cultural richness. The province is home to over 800 historical and cultural sites, including ancient stone houses, handicrafts, and hiking trails through the Hyrcanian forests, which are among the oldest temperate rainforests in the world. These natural wonders offer visitors a chance to experience Iran’s rich ecological diversity, from pristine beaches to snow-capped mountains.

In addition to its scenic beauty, Mazandaran is also home to Mount Damavand, the highest peak in Iran, as well as Alam-Kuh, another majestic mountain. Visitors are drawn to Mazandaran’s variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, mountaineering, and nature tours, all set against the backdrop of the Alborz Mountains. The region’s coastal beaches also attract those looking for relaxation by the Caspian Sea.

Mazandaran’s offerings extend beyond its natural beauty. The province is home to a vibrant culture that is deeply rooted in its local traditions, gastronomy, and art. For tourists seeking a more immersive cultural experience, Mazandaran provides opportunities to explore the local crafts, try traditional Persian cuisine, and learn about the unique customs of the region’s diverse communities.

International Recognition for Kandelous Village

Mazandaran’s cultural heritage has received significant international recognition, particularly with the recent recognition of Kandelous Village, located in the province. Kandelous was named one of the world’s 52 best tourism villages for 2025 by UNWTO, a testament to the region’s commitment to preserving its cultural traditions and sustainable tourism practices. The village, nestled in the foothills of the Alborz Mountains, is famous for its traditional stone houses and artisanal craftsmanship. It also serves as an example of how small communities can embrace tourism while maintaining their cultural identity.

This recognition is likely to increase the number of international tourists visiting Mazandaran, contributing to the development of the region’s eco-tourism and cultural tourism industries. The success of Kandelous Village is a perfect illustration of how Mazandaran is embracing sustainable tourism to protect its environment and cultural heritage, while simultaneously attracting global visitors.

Mazandaran’s Tourism Future: Sustainability and Growth

As Mazandaran continues to strengthen its tourism sector, the provincial government is focused on sustainable tourism that prioritizes environmental preservation and community involvement. By focusing on creating a tourism experience that integrates both the natural beauty of the region and the cultural richness of its villages, Mazandaran aims to provide tourists with an authentic and eco-friendly experience.

The province’s strategic tourism initiatives aim to promote its unique cultural heritage while also investing in modern infrastructure to accommodate growing visitor numbers. The increased focus on regional tourism diplomacy through initiatives like the fam tour is likely to result in lasting partnerships that will support sustainable tourism in the long term.

Mazandaran’s Growing Role in Regional Tourism

The fam tour in Mazandaran attended by tourism specialists from Russia, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan is a key milestone in establishing the province as a frontrunner in the field of regional tourism. Considering the natural beauty, the cultural richness, and the dedication to preserving and practicing sustainable tourism, Mazandaran has the potential to be a serious contender in the international tourism market. Mazandaran can become a top tourism destination for many travelers in the world in pursuit of adventure, culture, and sustainability through a unique blend of identity, innovative focus, and collaboration, and tourism to be the preserved culture and identity of the region to be the primary focus of the province.

The province appreciates its enhanced recognition as one of the primary tourism spots, and it is determined to continue developing collaborations which will broaden the province`s tourism sector. This will lead to an increase of visitors from abroad, while promoting responsibly sustainable and eco friendly tourism for future generations.
