The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised its citizens to avoid non-essential travel to the Puno region of Peru.

In a statement issued on February 1, the Ministry said that the demonstrations that characterised the region of Puno are no longer as violent and dangerous as before. Nonetheless, the Ministry still advises against travel to the region for safety purposes, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

According to the Ministry, the situation has normalised in the southern regions, except the Puno region. At the same time, air, train and road traffic in the popular tourist areas has primarily normalised, and for this reason, the travel advice for the other parts of the country has been lifted.

In January of this year, the Ministry also advised against all non-essential travel to Cuzco, Puno, Arequipa and Apurimac in Peru. The same has emphasised that since December 2022, there have been frequent and sometimes violent demonstrations in some regions of Peru.

In light of the ongoing protests, the United Kingdom Foreign Office has also strengthened its travel warnings for people going to Peru.

In December last year, Norwegian authorities also advised its citizens not to travel to large parts of Ethiopia. In this regard, the Ministry explained that travel advisories would be strengthened for western Oromia, among others.

The authority added that since an eruption in November 2020, the conflict in Ethiopia has gone through several phases, and the country has not been the safest to travel to.

In addition to the above-mentioned, in October last year, the country also advised its citizens to avoid travelling to the regions of Nablus and Jenin in the West Bank. Through a statement, the Foreign Ministry said that the security situation in the north of the West Bank has been unstable for a long time.

In the same month, Norwegian authorities advised Norwegian citizens to avoid non-essential travel to the West African country of Burkina Faso due to violence and unrest following a military coup in September.

As the Ministry explains, the situation in Burkina Faso has been assessed as worrying for security, and there is a risk of worsening the situation.

In September 2022, nationwide demonstrations, reactions from the authorities and the worsening security situation in Iran prompted Norway to advise against any travel to Iran that is not strictly necessary.

The protests follow the death of Mahsa Amini, an Iranian Kurdish woman who was arrested on suspicion of breaking Iran’s strict rules on wearing the hijab, the Islamic head covering for women. The woman in question died while in police custody after suffering multiple blows to the head.
