VDOT lifts lane closures, offers travel tips for the holidays | Articles

As Virginians head out for last-minute holiday shopping and travel, the Virginia Department of Transportation is offering resources to help drivers avoid congestion and travel safely.

VDOT will suspend many highway work zones and lift temporary lane closures on interstates and other major roads from noon Dec. 24, through noon Dec. 26, and again from noon Dec. 31, through noon  Jan. 2. Officials said some semi-permanent work zones will remain in place, and motorists should expect possible delays in those areas.

Drivers are encouraged to check VDOT’s travel advisories for the latest traffic updates across the state.

VDOT’s 511 system provides real-time information on traffic conditions, construction, incidents and congestion. The free 511 Virginia mobile app also offers access to traffic cameras, weather information and electric vehicle charging locations. Motorists can call 511 from any phone in Virginia to receive hands-free audible traffic alerts or visit 511.vdot.virginia.gov for updates.

The 511 website also features holiday travel trends maps for Dec. 24–26 and Dec. 31–Jan. 2, showing periods when congestion has historically been heaviest on Virginia interstates. While the maps do not predict exact conditions, officials said they can help travelers plan trips around peak traffic times.

Information on the reversible I-95 and I-395 Express Lanes and the I-495 Express Lanes is available at expresslanes.com.

Motorists traveling through Hampton Roads are encouraged to use alternate routes during the construction of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel expansion project. Recommended options include the I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel, the Route 17 James River Bridge, the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry and I-95. VDOT also warned that mechanical issues at the Route 17 George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge could result in bridge openings lasting 45 to 60 minutes.

VDOT urged drivers to prioritize safety during the holiday travel period. Officials reminded motorists to wear seat belts, avoid distracted driving, designate a sober driver if drinking and ensure vehicles are prepared for cold weather. Drivers are also encouraged to leave early, take breaks when tired at one of VDOT’s safety rest areas and follow the state’s Move Over law when approaching stopped vehicles with flashing lights.

For questions or to report hazardous road conditions, motorists can contact VDOT’s 24-hour Customer Service Center at my.vdot.virginia.gov or by calling 800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623).
