Amputee adventurer gears up for epic solo Africa ride

Matthew “Bushy” McKelvey (63), a determined adventurer and bilateral below-knee amputee, is setting out on a solo motorcycle journey across Africa.

His expedition is part of his No Legs, No Limits Africa initiative, a mission that he says goes far beyond personal adventure. McKelvey’s goal is to raise awareness, foster connections, and inspire meaningful change for the disabled community.

“As someone who has faced the challenges of being an amputee firsthand, I understand the struggles our community endures. But I also know the strength and determination within us. This journey is about amplifying those voices and showcasing that resilience,” said McKelvey.

Throughout his route, McKelvey plans to meet amputees in every country he visits. By listening to their stories, offering support, and sharing their experiences with the world on social media, he hopes to shine a spotlight on the incredible resilience of disabled individuals across Africa.

He plans to leave South Africa at the beginning of next month. This trip has been years in the making, and he decided that 2025 was the year to make it happen.

He added that the initiative also aims to advocate for greater inclusivity and resources for the disabled community. To bring this ambitious mission to life, McKelvey is seeking sponsorship and support.

Contributions will help cover travel expenses, provide essential equipment, and enable him to assist those he meets along the way. “Every contribution, no matter the size, fuels this journey of hope, empowerment, and connection,” said McKelvey.

He hopes to raise $50 000 (R927 000) to support his trip. “I have appealed for donations from people all over the world. This money is not just for me — I will also be helping amputees in the countries I visit.

I will be meeting Doctors Without Borders along the way, who will take me to see their patients. If I can get prosthetic legs for 10 amputees, I will be truly happy

McKelvey plans to travel 60 000 kilometres and visit more than 30 countries in a year.
To help raise funds, he will be hosting several fundraising events.

At 6pm on Thursday, he will host an auction of items, including signed world champion racing leathers, at the Maritzburg West Bowling Club.
