It’s finally September! With summer behind us, there’s no need to feel down. You may not have squeezed in that dream trip you had planned for the peak season because the flights were too expensive or work was taking up most of your calendar. Soak up the Great Outdoors in Glacier National Park, Montana, USA
The Glacier National Park in the northern US state of Montana is a dream for outdoor enthusiasts. It’s a complete package for people looking for an adventure trip in September: over 700 miles of trails featuring 200 gleaming lakes, deep valleys, and 25 dazzling glaciers.
Glacier National Park’s peak season is during the summer, from May until September, but things start to die down the further they roll closer to October because of the cold weather. That’s good news for you as you’ll have iconic spots like Grinnell Glacier and St Mary’s Falls all to yourself.
If you’re looking for an easy route, I can recommend the Avalanche Lake hike. It’s only around 9.5 km out and back from south of Avalanche Gorge Footbridge, with a 231-meter elevation gain and gorgeous vistas throughout. Anyone craving a more intense challenge will like the Siyeh Pass, a 15.8km out-and-back trail with a 684 elevation gain. While this route is quite a test even for experienced trekkers, when you set your eyes on the peaceful meadows and the towering rugged peaks in the distance, it will be all worth it.
A daily entrance pass for Glacier National Park costs $20 (€18.08) per person, but if you’re spending a few days there hiking on the trails, it’s better value to buy the annual pass for $70 (€63.29).
The closest airport to Glacier National Park is Kalispell Airport, also known as Glacier Park International Airport. You can get there by taxi/Uber and take a short 30-minute train ride. First, you’ll take a 17-minute taxi to Whitefish Amtrak Train Station; the prices start from $27.12 (€30). After you arrive, make sure to buy tickets for around $13.27 (€12) for the train in the direction to West Glacier Station; the journey should take 30 minutes. If you’re staying at one of the lodges in the park, they often provide shuttle services, eliminating the need for this suggested route.
Enjoy a Romantic Getaway in Québec City, Canada
No other place in Canada exudes as much romance as Québec City, with its delightful cobblestone streets, hilly passages, classic brick buildings, and stunning Neoclassical architecture. You could easily think you’re in a French city here, especially on your walks around Old Québec.
Found in the eastern part of the country, Québec lies on the banks of the Saint Lawrence River and is one of Canada’s oldest cities. French is the primary language spoken here, as it was once part of New France, an ex-French colony. So, don’t be surprised if the shopkeeper hits you with a little Comment Allez-Vous.
Getting lost in Old Québec should be everyone’s first port of call when they arrive. The best way to unearth the history of the cradle of French North America is on a walking tour with Cicérone Tours (tickets CAD 26.96 (€18.10)). You’ll get to roam through famous zones like the Latin Quarter and Petit-Champlain Borough while hearing the stories of four centuries of events that shaped this city.
While Niagra Falls may get all the attention of tourists visiting Canada, Québec has its own version, Montmorency Falls, which is 30 meters higher and just as impressive. This natural wonder is only about 15 minutes from downtown Québec, and tickets only cost CAD 8.78 (€5.89). But if you really want to catch some nice views of Montmorency Falls in all its glory, I suggest getting a return ticket for the cable car which is CAD 14.95 (€10.04) for a round trip.
Following your landing at Québec City Jean Lesage International Airport, you can take bus line 80 into the center for CAD 3.75 (€2.52); the journey takes around 50 minutes. However, if you plan to use the bus a lot during your time in Québec, you should buy a 1-day pass for CAD 10 (€6.71), as it’s better value.
Soak up the Best Weather in San Diego, California, USA
Get your fix of Californian sunshine in beautiful San Diego, which is located right down the very south of Cali, just by the USA/Mexico border. Travelers LOVE San Diego for its moderate year-round temperatures with minimum rainfall, making it easy to visit without planning too much around the seasons. In September, the temperatures typically range between 19°C and 25°C, so pack your sunscreen!
Chase down the rays at one of San Diego’s picturesque beaches along the Pacific Coast; Mission Beach is great for a mid-day stroll, while it is great for sunbathing and surfing. Be sure to check out La Jolla Shores Beach, in La Jolla, situated north of San Diego; that area, in general, is stunning; it’s one of the richest places in the entire city, so staying there will be off the cards for most of us.
At night, all the action revolves around the Gaslamp Quarter; it’s a district made up of 16 blocks, lined with buzzing bars, high-end eateries, souvenir shops, and interesting museums. The Gaslamp Quarter has a pretty spooky past, which is best learned about on the Ghosts of the Gaslamp Walking Tour (tickets cost $25 (€22.60)), where visitors get to visit some of the area’s most haunted locations, like hotels, brothels, saloons, and much more.
Those who like sports should try to pay a visit to the Padres’ home stadium, Petco Park, to catch a live baseball game during the Major League Baseball season, which runs between April and October. It’s quite a spectacle, even for people who aren’t baseball fans; the atmosphere there when there’s a home run is electric. Ticket prices vary based on availability and seating location, but usually, they’re available for around $33.95 (€30.69).
San Diego International Airport is a 20-minute MTS ride (subway) away from the city center. You can buy the tickets at the station when you get there; they only cost $2.50 (€2.26) for a one-way trip.
Bring Your Friends to Oaxaca, Mexico
Oaxaca embodies everything great about Mexico: colorful Indigenous architectural delights, irresistible, flavorful dishes, and ancient sites that will send you back thousands of years.
On paper, it’s the rainy season in Mexico, including Oaxaca in September, but it’s the final month, so the short, strong showers slowly reduce as the month goes on. This also means you can find some fantastic deals on accommodation right in the heart of town, which you’d pay double the price for once winter comes along.
Food is a major part of every trip to Oaxaca; the cuisine here isn’t like the rest of Mexico; it has been influenced by the 16 indigenous groups that call Oaxaca home. To try the tastiest Oaxacan dishes, I urge you to head to the Mercado 20 de Noviembre; you’ll smell the scent of burning Carne before you reach the front entrance. Some of the leading traditional bites you should try here include tlayudas, pollo con mole, chapulines (grasshoppers, that’s right), and tejate. Small dishes start from around MXN 50 (€2.29), and the portion sizes are pretty good.
Don’t miss Hierve el Agua when in Oaxaca; it’s an amazing group of natural rock formations made up of unique frozen waterfalls and soothing geothermal pools. I bet your first thought after seeing this place will be like mine, ‘How was this place made?’ There’s no concrete evidence behind Hierve el Agua’s creation, but experts have thought that spring water leaked from different limestone in the area and froze over time. Reaching Hierve el Agua requires some form of transport. Usually, people join a tour, although they can do it by public transport like I did. Altogether, the journey takes around 1 hour and a half and costs MXN 240 (€11.00) return, including entrance fees to the site.
After grabbing your bags at Oaxaca International Airport, you can hop on the bus into the city; it’s much cheaper than riding in a cab. Ticket prices are based on the zone you get off at Zone 1, MXN 100, and Zone 2, MXN 200 (€9.17). Bear in mind that the buses will depart only after all the seats have been taken, but usually when a flight has landed, they fill up anyway, so you don’t have to worry.
Treat Yourself to a City Break in Dallas, Texas, USA
Have a taste of the Texas lifestyle with a little city break to Dallas. Despite having a reputation for being the home of cowboys and that country and Western culture you’ve seen in the movies, that’s not all Dallas has to offer. It’s actually quite a hip city with cool neighborhoods like Deep Ellum and the Uptown area and cultural quarters like the Arts District, where the Dallas Museum of Art and Winspear Opera House reside.
Dallas is on the pricier side of this list of places to fly to in September, but you can get by on a small budget thanks to many of the free attractions scattered around the city. Without spending a dollar, you can pop by the Dallas Museum of Art, J.Erik Jonsson Central Library, African American Museum, and Bathhouse Cultural Center. That way, your money can go towards a visit to The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza to discover the stories behind the assassination of JFK (tickets cost $22 (€19.89) + $1 (€0.90) convenience fee if booked online).
One day of your Dallas adventure should go towards visiting Forth Worth’s Stockyards (free entry); it’s a 98-acre site that showcases the best of the Wild West. You’ll need a day at least here to relish the collection of over 20 attractions, bars, restaurants, and gift stores selling all kinds of Texas-inspired collectibles. There’s also a cattle drive that’s held here twice a day for visitors to see; don’t get too close to the herd, though, or you might get hit with one of their horns.
A bucket-list-worthy thing to do at Forth Worth’s Stockyards is go watch a rodeo show in the Cowtown Coliseum. This experience is as Texas as it gets; watch a handful of riders hang on for dear life as they jump around the field. Events are held here on most Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays in September, but you should book tickets for them in advance online in case they sell out. Expect to pay around $35.39 (€32) per ticket, but the event type will impact the price.
Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is well-connected to the city as well as Forth Worth in case you want to go straight to the Stockyards after you’ve landed. The DART rail service is the cheapest mode of transport to take; it only costs $2 (€1.81) for a midday pass or $6 (€5.42) for a full-day pass. Typically, the journey takes about 50 minutes.
