CS Gupta visits KTR, launches website to boost eco-tourism

ITANAGAR, Apr 29: In a landmark demonstration of GoAP’s unwavering commitment to environmental protection, sustainable development and digital transformation in conservation sector, chief secretary Manish Kumar Gupta visited Kamlang Tiger Reserve (KTR) on Monday despite intermittent rainfall.
Gupta, accompanied by Lohit DC K.C. Damo, SP Thutan Jamba, Wakro ADC A J Lungphi and senior officials, escorted by DFO Jumdo Geiyi, RFO Bunty Tao and field staff trekked to watchtower at Mithun Gate to get first-hand knowledge of challenges in protecting the forest.
Gupta also planted a sapling of native Mulberry species on the way, interacted with frontline forest staff, appreciated their dedication and efforts in managing and protecting one of India’s ecologically sensitive zones.
The visit highlighted the rich biodiversity of KTR, a sanctuary teeming with rare flora and fauna. A notable moment of the day was the sighting of several unique avian species, including Great Barbet, Paradise Flycatcher and Streaked Spiderhunter, reinforcing the reserve’s critical role as a vital habitat for both endemic and migratory birds.
RFO Tao briefed in details about round-the-clock patrolling in the challenging terrain that ranges from 500 to 4,500 meters above sea level, strategic initiatives to conserve the fragile ecosystems and combat threats, like poaching and habitat degradation.
It was followed by screening of documentary – The Blurred Boundaries—a poignant portrayal of the complex interplay between human development and natural ecosystems in the region. The screening gave compelling insights for urgent need for sustainable practices and the preservation of ecological balance in the state.
Gupta was presented with a framed photograph of iconic Glaw Lake and a copy of “Kamlang – At a Glance,” a publication that offers a succinct overview of the KTR’s ecological wealth and ongoing conservation.
The CS also launched official website of KTR ( developed by Environment, Forests & Climate Change department, and marked a leap forward in integration of technology with environmental governance.
Gupta, in his address, said: “This digital initiative represents a strategic step forward in enhancing transparency, improving public engagement, and promoting responsible tourism. KTR is one of our most treasured ecological assets and this platform will serve as a vital link between nature, knowledge and the public.” Echoing this sentiment, DC Damo said: “The website will act as an authentic information hub and an open invitation to nature enthusiasts and responsible tourists to explore and appreciate the natural beauty of Kamlang.”
DFO Geiyi added: “This platform will enable more effective communication with the public, improve visitor coordination, and strengthen our conservation initiatives through digital outreach.”
The team also visited Wakro where local Mishmi community presented vibrant cultural performances and traditional cuisine in the evening.
